The 1998 Sabre 402 is a 40-foot fiberglass sailing yacht designed by Jim Taylor for both racing and cruising. Built with classic Maine craftsmanship, this boat balances performance capability with refined accommodations. The hull features a fiberglass deck with molded non-skid, teak and holly cabin sole, and American cherry bulkheads and cabinetry. A Yanmar 4JH2HEC 50-horsepower diesel engine powers the yacht, paired with a Hurth transmission and a three-blade PYI Max-Prop feathering propeller.
The boat is equipped with comprehensive systems installed or upgraded from 2018 onwards. Electrical infrastructure includes three lithium group 27 batteries, dual alternators (80A and 150A), a 2000-watt inverter, and a three-bank charger. Navigation and autopilot systems feature a nine-inch Zeus3 display, dual four-inch Triton color displays, B&G Halo radar, Vesper AIS transponder, and Titan 2 autopilot. A Rainman portable watermaker produces 35 gallons per hour, and systems for water heating, refrigeration, and galley functions have been updated with new components through 2024.
Rigging is all stainless steel rod with a triple-spreader configuration and a Harken roller furler. The sail inventory includes a 2013 North Norlam main with three reefpoints and matching 110% headsail, plus a North 0.75-ounce asymmetrical spinnaker. Seven Lewmar winches (two #54 and five #44) manage sheets and halyards. Ground tackle consists of a Rocna 25-pound anchor with 200 feet of chain and 150 feet of rope, a CQR 45-pound plow, and a Bruce 44-pound claw, all deployed via a Lewmar dual-action windlass installed in 2022.
Recent work includes a full rod rigging and mast refurbishment in 2018–2019, bottom paint with Micron ablative applied in 2024, engine mounts replaced in 2020, and a new water heater installed in 2024. A six-person life raft was serviced in 2019 with 12-year expiry. Safety gear includes an ACR EPIRB, jack lines, personal harnesses, and fire extinguishers. The boat carries multiple anchor tackle options, a swim ladder, and brackets for outboard engines, kayaks, and Starlink equipment.
