The Spirit of Pilar is a 38-foot sport fishing cruiser styled after Ernest Hemingway's legendary 1934 Wheeler. Built with a hull design by Walter McGinnis, the boat underwent a comprehensive two-year rebuild by Shannon Boat Company that retained the classic lines while modernizing every system. The hull was reconstructed from the keel up using cold-molded epoxy and layered cedar sheathed in epoxy-saturated cloth for durability and low maintenance. The entire deckhouse is new and finished with Awlgrip coating. Two new Yanmar diesel engines deliver 150 horsepower each at cruising speeds around 10 knots, with a maximum speed of 12 knots.
The layout includes two cabins with berths and a single head. The wheelhouse features settee berths, and a forward private cabin provides additional sleeping space. The galley and head below deck incorporate custom accessibility features, including an electric lift mechanism for mobility access. All systems throughout—fuel tanks, steering, electrical, plumbing, reverse-cycle air conditioning and heating, refrigeration, and microwave—are new. A trim tab aids maneuverability.
The boat was actively used for extended periods in southern Florida, serving disabled veterans and passengers on fishing and cruising charters. Its design accommodates up to 12 passengers for tours or sport fishing operations. The comprehensive rebuild and attention to system renewal ensure a low-maintenance yacht ready for extended use.
