1936 Classic Motorsailer

This 1936 motorsailer was designed by Walton Hubbard and Frederick Brewer, and built by South Coast Boat Building Company in Newport Beach. She measures 59 feet long with a 15-foot 6-inch beam. The hull is mahogany planked on oak frames with teak decking over fir, and she is ketch-rigged with spruce masts. Her Atlas Imperial diesel engine produces 135 horsepower and cruises at 7 knots with a maximum speed of 10 knots. The yacht served with the United States Coast Guard during World War II, a distinction marked by seven chevrons displayed on the wheelhouse as authorized by the Secretary of the Navy.

The accommodations center on a spacious layout with traditional character. The forward stateroom features a full-size bed with an ensuite head, stand-up shower, and vintage sink, along with in-floor heating and radiators. A V-berth forward provides two bunks with storage. The wheelhouse, accessed via full-size Dutch doors, has a centerline helm with chart table, leather settees, and panoramic windows. The galley sits port side behind the wheelhouse and includes a dishwasher, freezer, refrigerator, trash compactor, and 21 high-capacity storage drawers. An aft salon with convertible leather settee doubles as sleeping space, and a guest head is located starboard side. Main living areas offer 6 feet 4 inches of headroom throughout.

The boat features comprehensive systems for extended cruising. The fuel tanks hold 1,000 gallons across four black iron tanks, fresh water capacity is 200 gallons, and a 7,600-watt Yanmar generator supplies electrical power. Heating comes from a Buderus boiler with Riello burner feeding cast iron radiators and in-floor heating. Navigation equipment includes Garmin GPS and depth/speed instruments, RayMarine display, 32-nautical-mile radar, and VHF radio. Ground tackle comprises two 75-pound Danforth anchors with 500 feet of galvanized chain, plus a spare with nylon rode. The engine room is fully accessible with standing headroom and dedicated workbench space.

The yacht has undergone extensive restoration over the past several years. A complete interior modernization in 2021 and 2022 included fresh Polyurethane paint throughout, new battery banks, fuel system cleaning and lining, new sanitation and water heating systems, and rebuilt mechanical components. A new 40-gallon holding tank, Rule bilge pumps, shower sump pump, and fuel polishing system were installed. Recent hull work included new transom and bulwark rebuilding, with bottom paint, hull paint, and propeller coating applied in 2022. New zincs, air lines, and washdown systems complete the recent work list.
