1957 Silver Classic Gentleman Yacht

Built in 1957 by Scottish shipyard James A. Silver to a design by renowned motor yacht designer John Bain, this 85-foot wooden motor yacht exemplifies mid-century craftsmanship. The hull features double planking of 40 mm teak with inner layers set at a 45-degree angle, teak decking, and a teak deckhouse. Two Gardner engines rated at 428 hp combined deliver a cruising speed of 10 knots. The yacht's distinctive layout divides the boat into three equal sections—bow, centre, and stern—each with generous open spaces, a notable feature for an ocean-going design of that era.

The accommodation spans six cabins across two distinct zones. Forward, the crew area includes a galley with an air-conditioned wine pantry, the captain's quarters, a double cabin for crew, and a head. Aft, guests have access to a double cabin with transverse bed and ensuite, two identical double cabins with wall beds and private heads, plus a dedicated guest head. The main saloon runs the full width of the yacht, flooded with natural light through large side windows and stern glazing, and features ash furniture boards, teak flooring, mahogany ceiling structures, and cream upholstery. A traditional wheelhouse with continuous rounded glass panels sits above, accessed by a companionway from the saloon and furnished with a classic steering wheel, navigation seating, and a Portuguese bridge surrounding the deckhouse.

Between 2013 and 2014, the yacht underwent a comprehensive restoration at Genova's Mostes shipyard. The wooden hull was re-planked where deteriorated using steam-bent timber fastened with copper rivets. The original Gardner engines were overhauled. The entire electrical and air-conditioning system was rewired, and a new gyroscopic stabilisation system was installed. All portholes and skylights were removed, polished, and reassembled with fresh seals. The bridge was fully reconditioned and its windows replaced with identical units. A large cockpit partly covered by the upper deck and awning provides outdoor dining and entertaining space, with side decks leading forward and steel and teak railings protecting the topsides. The bow area remains clear and spacious, suitable for tender stowage.
