Built in 1962 at Cheoy Lee Shipyard in Hong Kong, Isobar is a 45-foot custom sloop with a 12-foot beam and 28,000-pound displacement. Her hull is strip-planked Philippine mahogany with a full keel and counter stern, featuring a monocoque wineglass design. The deck is teak throughout. The design, lofted by a naval architect, draws inspiration from classic Sparkman & Stevens designs, notably the 52-foot yawl Dorade, and was conceived for the long downwind passages typical of transoceanic racing.
The rig consists of a 48-foot deck-stepped mast with a 22-foot boom, set up for a low-aspect mainsail configuration. A single Tanmar diesel engine of 53 horsepower provides auxiliary power. The yacht's fittings and systems were designed and engineered with careful attention to detail.
Isobar has been restored and maintained throughout her service life, preserving her original character and seaworthiness.
