Built in 1964, the Huckins Out Islander 56 is a classic motor yacht with the distinctive "Quadraconic" hull form that defines the builder's reputation for seaworthy, efficient performance. The cold-molded wood construction, originally glassed over at the factory, draws its engineering lineage from the PT boats Huckins built for the Pacific fleet during World War II. Twin Cummins diesel engines rated at 860 horsepower deliver cruising speeds of 18 knots and a maximum speed of 22 knots.
The layout comprises three staterooms and two heads, with a spacious flybridge topped by a removable sun cover. The galley is well-equipped with ample storage and a dedicated pantry. Hydro-slave hydraulic power-assisted steering and Glendinning electronic controls support ease of operation, with new electronics installed at both the lower helm and flybridge stations.
The boat underwent a major 18-month refit at Brooklin Boatyard in Maine during 2009 and 2010, followed by a comprehensive structural rebuild of the bottom completed in Bristol, Rhode Island in 2018 and 2019. The entire vessel was re-wired and re-plumbed during these periods. Fire-Boy automatic fire-extinguishing systems have been installed in the bilge and engine room for added safety.
