SCOOCH is a 1970 Hinckley Bermuda 40 yawl built with a solid hand-laid fiberglass hull reinforced at stress points. The boat features graceful traditional lines with a white Awlgrip topsides, gray nonskid deck, and classic blue boot and cove stripes. The hull incorporates a bronze external keel and foil-shaped centerboard operated by worm gear, while the deck is permanently fiberglassed and bolted to the hull. Varnished teak trim, stainless steel pulpits and rails, and polished bronze hardware complete the exterior presentation.
From 2022 to 2024, a comprehensive refit at a Massachusetts boatyard replaced the engine, air conditioning, wiring, refrigeration, navigation systems, head, water heater, and steering gear. The boat now runs a 50-horsepower Nanni diesel engine with just 96 hours of operation as of September 2025. The electrical system includes a 2,000-watt Mastervolt inverter/charger, new AC and DC wiring throughout, and 110-volt shore power capability. Navigation equipment consists of a Garmin GPSMAP 8610 multifunction display, GHC 50 and Reactor 40 autopilot, GND 10 sounder, and GNX wind instruments.
The traditional interior features a Herreshoff-style layout with varnished Honduran mahogany trim, white overhead, and solid varnished teak and holly cabin sole. The main salon includes a drop-leaf dining table with the centerboard mechanism beneath, port-side transom berths with a pilot berth, and a starboard fixed berth reconfigured during the recent refit. A galley to port has a gimballed three-burner Shipmate stove with oven and manual water pump. The forward cabin contains a V-berth that converts to a double, and accommodations sleep five overall. New MarineAir air conditioning with reverse-cycle heat and opening hatches provide comfort.
The boat carries four sails—main, genoa, mizzen, and staysail—plus a spinnaker on traditional aluminum spars with wire rigging and Harken head sail furler. Winch systems include Barient self-tailing and two-speed models, plus Lewmar mast-mounted winches. Additional mechanical systems include a three-blade feathering propeller, Racor fuel/water filter, Groco sea strainer, Isotemp water heater, two propane tanks, manual and automatic bilge pumps, and an electric windlass with local foot controls. A four-person Viking liferaft and standard safety and navigation lighting complete the equipment list.
