1974 Custom Trimaran
About This Yacht
Try Magic is a 48-foot custom trimaran built in 1974 with a solid fiberglass hull and a 30-foot beam. This British-built Phillips design delivers exceptional stability and open-ocean performance, combining a streamlined interior layout suited to passage-making with the structural durability of all-fiberglass construction—a significant advantage over the wood-composite multihulls of its era.
The boat has undergone a comprehensive modernization to 100% electric propulsion. The system includes a high-efficiency inboard electric motor paired with a hydro-generating propeller that charges the battery bank under sail. Power comes from four Epoch lithium batteries managed through a fully integrated Victron energy network, supplemented by eight deck-mounted solar panels for off-grid charging. A brand-new North Sails suite is included, with standing rigging in working condition. Recent maintenance includes a bottom job completed in July 2025 and a hull cleaning in January 2026.
Accommodations include a newly installed marine head and a brand-new Dometic dual-zone freezer/refrigerator. A portable Honda backup generator is included. The boat has been sailed extensively under its own power, including a full passage from Westport, Washington to San Francisco under sail alone, demonstrating reliable handling and seaworthiness in heavy Pacific Northwest conditions.
