The Devil's Gauntlet is an 80-foot custom brigantine built in 1977 as an exact full-size replica of the British Royal Navy ship Sultana (1768). Constructed from Kevlar and polymer composite hull material, the yacht features two wooden masts, traditional brigantine rigging with new synthetic running lines, and a modern Cummins 210-horsepower diesel engine with only 1,038 hours of service. The design blends historic sailing ship aesthetics with contemporary functionality, including sails and rigging maintained in excellent condition and fitted with new custom-made Windjammer sails.
Accommodation spans five staterooms sleeping ten to twelve guests total, with a master suite featuring an ensuite head, full bath with waterfall shower, and four additional guest cabins. The main salon features a full wet bar with granite countertop, a U-shaped settee, and mirrored cabinetry. The galley includes a Force 10 propane stove, full-size refrigeration, microwave, two ice makers, and Italian granite countertops with stone vessel sinks. Two electric heads serve the accommodations, supported by an ElectroScan waste treatment system and 50-gallon holding tank.
Systems throughout reflect extensive recent upgrades: a complete refit between 2019 and 2022 included new lithium-ion batteries, a 5000-watt inverter, 800-watt solar panels with wind generator, and a 300-gallon-per-day watermaker. Electrical distribution uses dedicated 12-volt, 120-volt, and 50-amp shore power panels with dual shore power hookups. Navigation electronics include Garmin GPS chartplotter and radar, VHF radios, depth finder, and compass. Climate control features two air conditioning units, tankless propane water heater installed July 2025, and full-size washer and dryer.
Recent equipment additions include nine new lithium-ion batteries, new propeller, new VHF systems, new 10-person life raft, new galley sink, and new saltwater washdown system. The dripless shaft seal was replaced September 2025. Fuel capacity totals 365 gallons across two USCG-certified aluminum tanks; freshwater capacity is 110 gallons. Safety systems include Fireboy halon engine room protection, ten ABC-type fire extinguishers, forty-seven adult and twenty-four child USCG life jackets, and alarms for fire, CO2, and propane.
