The 1981 Aries 32 is a fiberglass cruising sailboat built on a platform designed for blue-water sailing. Powered by a 30-horsepower Westerbeke diesel engine, the boat reaches a cruising speed of 5 knots with a maximum speed of 6.5 knots. The hull measures 32 feet in length with a 9.58-foot beam, offering a balanced form that handles predictably both in calm conditions and rough seas. A 470-square-foot sail plan includes a battened mainsail and furling jib, both new in 2017, plus an asymmetric spinnaker. Lazy jacks were added in 2023 to simplify mainsail handling.
Below deck, a single cabin provides a galley, enclosed head with a freshwater Raritan Superflush toilet, and sleeping berths. Recent refits have modernized the interior substantially: new upholstery and foam in 2022, a new galley counter and sink in 2022, and a completely sanded and refinished cabin sole in 2025. The galley is equipped with a Cool Blue holding-plate refrigerator and freezer that draws 25 amp-hours per day. Fresh water capacity totals 70 gallons across two stainless steel tanks, with a new pump and hoses installed in 2022.
The electrical system has been extensively renewed. A 200-amp-hour LiFePO4 house battery bank and wet-cell starting battery were both installed in 2023. Shore power, a 1000-watt Xantrex inverter, and an 85-watt solar panel array support 12-volt loads. Navigation electronics include a Datamarine depth sounder, Raymarine SL70C radar, Navico TP300 autopilot, and Icom VHF radio. The engine received new fuel tanks and hoses, a new fuel pump and injectors, and new raw water cooling components between 2017 and 2022. A new exhaust mixing elbow was installed in 2022. The hull underwent major bottom work in 2022: all old paint and gelcoat were removed, blisters were repaired, and five coats of epoxy barrier coat plus three coats of bottom paint were applied; fresh bottom paint was applied again in 2025. Ground tackle includes three anchors with a Simpson Lawrence Sea Tiger windlass, plus a Mercury 3.5-horsepower four-stroke outboard motor from 2018 on a dedicated bracket.
