1982 Custom Virpack Steelhull

A 61-foot steel-hulled motorsailer built in 1982, this Custom Virpack combines the seagoing design principles the Dutch builder is known for with practical ocean-crossing capability. The round-bilge displacement hull is built for fuel efficiency and heavy-weather performance, while the motorsailer configuration balances the volume and range of a motor yacht with sail-steadying and auxiliary propulsion. She displaces 124,000 pounds and operates at a cruising speed of 8 knots with a maximum speed of 9 knots.

Power comes from a Cummins 855-horsepower diesel engine supported by dual Phasor generators—9.5 and 21.5 kilowatt units. The engine received a comprehensive overhaul including new water pump, exhaust manifold, hoses, belts, and full oil servicing. All heat exchangers were removed and serviced, and the engine block was refinished. Fuel systems were rebuilt with saddle and front tanks cleaned and polished, new fuel lines, and a new fuel manifold. The shaft was removed, inspected, and reinstalled with new packing, and the propeller was checked and balanced. Steering systems were upgraded with new hydraulic lines and riser blocks.

Accommodation includes two Raritan heads and features comprehensive water systems with new PEX-A lines throughout and cleaned, painted water tanks. Heating and cooling are handled by three Webasto S16 BlueCool units with new seawater pumps. A new black water tank and macerator pump support the sanitation systems. A new refrigerator chiller and davit motor round out the mechanical upgrades. A 5,000-watt Victron inverter and Dakota lithium batteries provide power management.

Electronics installed in 2023 include three 12-inch Simrad NSS Evo 3 multifunction displays, Simrad AP 44 and AP 48 autopilot control heads, Simrad HSS sounder with Airmar 3D transducer, Simrad Halo radar, Tempest weather station, two Icom 605 VHF radios, and HS 75 GPS compass. The boat carries 1/2-inch and 5/8-inch anchor chain and includes a new Balmar forward hatch.
