The 1982 Tayana 37 is a full-keeled offshore cruiser designed by Bob Perry, built as hull 316 at the Ta-Yang yard in Taiwan. This double-ender carries 22,500 pounds empty and 8,000 pounds of iron ballast, with a distinctive heavy-displacement profile featuring pronounced sheer, molded plank lines, bowsprit, and teak rub rail. The cutter rig includes a Profurl titanium roller furler on the headsail, a self-tending staysail on a club boom, and a heavily built mainsail with three deep reefs and a flattening reef—all halyards run internally. A three-cylinder Yanmar 3HMF diesel producing 30 horsepower drives a MaxProp feathering propeller; the engine was rebuilt and installed in 2024 with 120 hours of operation.
Below, the interior is entirely teak joinery with six-foot-four-inch headroom throughout. The layout comprises a forward cabin with a Pullman berth for two, a main saloon with a pullout settee double, a quarter berth, and fixed pedestal armchairs flanking the chart table. The head sits in the bow with a Jabsco toilet, sink, and shower sump. The galley features a gimbaled two-burner ENO stove with oven, a deep double stainless sink with pressure and hand pump, and an Adler-Barbour refrigeration unit with ice-making capability. Brass oil lamps, numbered louvered lockers, a wine locker, and pantry storage complete the accommodations.
Ventilation is extensive: thirteen bronze opening portholes with screens and Lexan storm shutters, large double-hinged deck hatches in the head and over the Pullman berth, a butterfly hatch over the salon, three dorade vents, and a windscoop. The cockpit is small and seaworthy with fast-draining benches, a hand-frapped wheel, a six-inch C.Plath Venus binnacle compass, and canvas dodger. Tankage includes 90 gallons of fuel, 125 gallons of fresh water (main and auxiliary), and 50 gallons of holding capacity. A PowerSurvivor desalinator, Scotch bonnet light race wins, and transatlantic cruising history testify to the boat's capability. Recent refits address engine, transmission, transmission shaft, cutless bearing, and sidedeck repairs, with new instrument panel and through-hull work completed in 2024–2025.
