The Island Trader 40 is a solidly built motor sailor with substantial volume and a balanced design suited equally to cruising under power or sail. This 1984 yacht measures 39 feet in length with a 13-foot beam, constructed in fiberglass with a Ford Lehman 120 hp diesel engine. The boat carries 1,000 liters of diesel and 1,000 liters of fresh water, enabling extended passages. Under engine at 1,800 RPM, fuel consumption runs approximately 3.2 liters per hour at 6.5 knots. Under sail on a beam reach, the boat achieves 8.5 knots; typical performance averages around 6 knots in moderate conditions. The engine shows approximately 2,300 hours on the counter.
The interior layout centers on a large forward cabin with a convertible salon berth, complemented by a roomy galley equipped with a four-burner gas stove, oven, and refrigerator with freezer capacity. A spacious shower, electric toilet, and heating system serve the accommodation. The cockpit and foredeck are generously proportioned for outdoor living. Headroom throughout reaches approximately 1.90 meters. Both inside and outside steering positions are provided, with the exterior helm featuring a single-lever engine control.
Navigation and systems have been substantially renewed from 2020 onward. Electronics include a Furuno TZT2 12-inch plotter with multifunctional display, Navpilot 300 autopilot, Furuno satellite compass and AIS transponder, DRS4L radar, DSC radio, and handheld radio with DSC and AIS capability. TimeZero navigation software runs on the onboard computer. A 12-inch monitor displays battery banks, tank levels, and camera feeds. A bow thruster aids maneuvering, while an Eberspächer air heater provides cabin warmth.
Recent improvements include new sails (mainsail and furling jib system), standing rigging, guard rails, cushions, sprayhood, and deck refinishing with anti-slip paint. Battery capacity comprises three 110 Ah AGM banks supplemented by a 50 Ah lithium battery added in 2022. New custom-made solar panels installed in 2022 feed a modern inverter supplying 230-volt power. The sails in use are older but serviceable.
