1984 Liberty 458

The Liberty 458 is a 45-foot fiberglass sailing yacht built in 1984 as one of only 31 examples. Designed for bluewater cruising and ocean passages, she features a cutter rig and draws 6 feet 4 inches, making her suitable for Intracoastal Waterway cruising. The boat handles efficiently under sail and is capable of single-handed operation.

Below deck, three cabins provide sleeping berths with two heads for crew comfort. An 80-horsepower Perkins diesel engine with 5,173 hours drives a three-blade feathering Max-Prop. Fuel capacity is 165 gallons, fresh water 240 gallons, and black water 40 gallons, monitored through a tank tender system. Propulsion history includes engine starter replacement and complete exhaust work in 2019, with a PSS shaft seal fitted.

The rigging was replaced in 2016 with Sta-Lok fittings and a modern standing package. Sails include an in-mast furling mainsail with Schaeffer boom furler fitted in 2018, plus two asymmetric spinnakers of 1,300 and 900 square feet. Two Lewmar Evo electric winches added in 2018 assist handling. The deck was refiberglassed and painted with non-skid in 2022, and the bottom was painted in 2023.

Power systems are comprehensive: eight AGM house batteries totaling 900 amp-hours, a seven-kilowatt Kubota genset, two alternators, three 350-watt solar panels with individual Victron controllers, and a battery monitoring system. Electronics encompass B&G systems including hydraulic autopilot, chartplotter with integrated camera, ICOM SSB and ham radios, and dedicated mast and wind sensors. The galley holds a four-burner propane stove, refrigeration with freezer, 12-volt watermaker, ice maker, and multiple cooking appliances. A diesel heater, electric head with manual backup, and portable air conditioning support comfort underway. The boat includes a Portland Pudgy tender with outboard.
