The 1985 Contest 41 Ketch is a fiberglass sailing yacht with a full ketch rig, powered by a 62-horsepower Volvo diesel engine. Built by Contest, a Dutch builder known for sturdy cruising sailboats, this 41-footer has a beam of 12.67 feet and a modified cat iron keel with trailing winglets. The boat carries a comprehensive suite of sails including mainsail, 120 genoa, jib, mizzen, and storm jib, with roller furling on the headsail and a Dutchman flaking system on both mainsail and mizzen. The aluminum Selden spars are fitted with stainless steel standing rigging and an insulated backstay.
Below, the layout provides accommodation for six with a private V-berth cabin forward that includes an ensuite head, and an aft owner's cabin with a full-width berth and second ensuite head. The main cabin features an L-shaped settee to port with a straight settee opposite, fixed dining table with folding leaves, and storage compartments throughout. The U-shaped galley is equipped with a Taylor two-burner propane stove with griddle and broiler, double stainless steel sinks with hot and cold water, a top-loading refrigerator with 12-volt Grunert cold plate, and generous drawer and cabinet storage. Forward of the galley is a navigation station with built-in instruments and the master electrical panel.
The electrical system includes four Trojan T-105 6-volt batteries in the house bank, a separate 12-volt engine start battery, an 80-amp Balmar alternator, battery charger, and shore power connection. Navigation and communication equipment comprise an Icom MC 80 VHF, Vigil radar, Navstar GPS, depth sounder, autopilot, Micrologic Master Chart plotter, and Plath compass. Deck equipment includes electric windlass, plow and Danforth anchors, davits, teak decks, hard windshield and dodger, cockpit and aft deck awnings, and fresh and saltwater washdowns. An 8-foot West Marine inflatable tender is also included.
The boat was last hauled and painted in 2018. The engine features fresh water cooling, manual wheel steering with cockpit controls, and an engine alarm. An Espar diesel heater is aboard but has not been used in recent years. Two manual heads serve the accommodation — the forward head has a holding tank, and the aft head discharges overboard. Bilge pumping is handled by both manual and automatic pumps, with hand-held fire extinguishers on board. A Max Prop feathering propeller is fitted, with a spare two-blade prop included.
