This 1986 Ericson 381 is a Bruce King design that balances performance sailing with cruising comfort. The masthead sloop sits on a fin keel with spade rudder, offering responsive handling both under sail and at the helm. The cockpit layout suits short-handed sailing and accommodates crews comfortably for extended passages. At 38 feet with a 12-foot beam, the boat displaces 14,500 pounds with 6,300 pounds of ballast.
Below deck, the two-cabin, one-head layout centers around a saloon with cabinetry and woodwork in good condition. Interior cushions were replaced in 2021. The galley includes a 110V microwave and an LPG system ready for stove or oven installation. The head features a manual Jabsco pump with a 20-gallon holding tank, rebuilt macerator, and pressurized water system supplemented by foot pumps. A hot water heater draws from either shore power or the engine heat exchanger.
Power comes from a Perkins 4.107M 45-horsepower diesel in excellent running condition that starts reliably even after extended layups. Recent mechanical work includes an alternator rebuild in 2025, starter motor replacement in 2024, three new 12-volt batteries in 2021, and updated wiring throughout. A CPT autopilot and suite of Signet Marine instruments—wind/speed, knotlog with new sensor, and depth sounder—handle navigation. The S-L Seawolf 520 windlass was overhauled in 2021, and Raytheon radar is installed.
The mainsail flies on a Flying Dutchman system while the 130% genoa uses Harken furling gear. A full dodger and new 2022 bimini provide weather protection. The hull bottom was repainted in 2022 with no blisters observed, and keel bolts were re-torqued in 2021. Several minor projects remain: installation of an included new depth sounder sensor at the next haul-out, a small engine coolant line leak repair, head door handle replacement, and cabin header zipper inspection.
