The 1987 Passport 40 is a fiberglass sailing yacht designed by Robert Perry for extended blue-water cruising. Built in Taiwan, she combines proven seaworthiness with thoughtful deck layout. A single diesel Perkins engine rated at 50 horsepower provides auxiliary power at a cruising speed of around 7 knots. The hull measures 40 feet in length with a 12.58-foot beam.
Deck features emphasize simplicity and single-handed sailing capability. All lines lead aft, and the boat carries an eWincher power winch for mainsail and dinghy handling. A recently installed Hydrovane provides hands-free steering under sail, while a tiller pilot assists when motoring. A newly serviced Lofrans Tigress windlass manages a Rocna anchor with 330 feet of 5/16-inch chain. A new bimini and recently resewed dodger offer weather protection.
The interior accommodates two cabins and two heads, with a layout designed for either single-handed operation or cruising couples. A U-shaped galley sits at the companionway base, while an L-shaped saloon forward features a large dinette that doubles as an engine compartment hatch, allowing excellent access to machinery. To starboard, a rear stateroom serves crew, with a rear-facing nav station and a long pilot berth forward of it.
Electrical systems were upgraded in 2024, with 660 watts of new solar panels, three new AGM batteries, and a Victron solar controller. Five Barrient winches manage sail trim. The boat has logged extensive miles throughout the Sea of Cortez and along Mexico's Pacific Coast.
