The Tartan 40 is a fiberglass cruising yacht designed by Sparkman & Stephens, built in 1987. She features an innovative keel and centerboard arrangement that delivers balanced performance both upwind and downwind. The hull carries teak toe-rail, teak coamings, and wide side decks with molded non-skid surfaces. A 40-horsepower Yanmar diesel installed new in 2008 provides reliable propulsion. The 40-foot length and 12.67-foot beam support a 9-foot-3-inch cockpit with a nine-position sail locker and generous lazarettes aft.
Below deck, the yacht offers a two-cabin, one-head layout with hand-crafted teak trim throughout. The aft cabin to starboard includes a large berth and extensive storage with cedar-lined hanging locker and drawers. The forward stateroom has a V-berth with six-inch foam mattress and cedar hanging locker. The port aft navigation station sits open and accessible. The L-shaped galley features a Force 10 three-burner stove with oven, top and front-loading icebox with four-inch foam insulation, and stainless steel twin sinks. The main salon houses settees and a centerline drop-leaf table that converts to a double berth. The head includes a sit-down shower with storage and access via teak privacy doors. Ten aluminum-framed opening ports with screens, two large overhead hatches, and two dorades provide cross-ventilation.
Recent systems improvements include a complete Navtec hydraulic system with rebuilt vang and backstay cylinders, standing rigging replaced in 2023, running rigging updated through 2022, and a new Navtec System V hydraulic panel for mainsail boom and backstay tension control. A Lewmar windlass handles rope and chain, complemented by eight Spinlock clutches and Barient winches. The sails include a 2017 Z Sails main and 130-percent RF genoa, along with a 90-percent jib, asymmetrical spinnaker, and stay sail.
Navigation and electronics were fully upgraded in 2022 with B&G systems: a Vulcan 12 multifunction display, NAC 3 autopilot, Halo 20+ radar, Standard Horizon MATRIX AIS VHF, and Vesper XB-6000 AIS transponder integrated on NMEA 2000 wiring. Electrical systems include a 100-amp Balmar alternator with ARS5 regulator, Xantrex Freedom SW2000W inverter and charger, two 135-watt solar panels with controllers, and four Deka GC-25 house batteries installed in 2018. The galley features a Seagull IV water purification system and Isotherm water heater. A 16,000-BTU Marine Air reverse-cycle heat and air conditioning system with two independent units keeps the cabin comfortable. Interior cushions and upholstery were replaced in 2014.
