This 78-foot steel schooner was custom-built in 1989 as an expedition yacht designed for extended offshore cruising under sail and power. The hull features beautiful lines and reinforced construction with a strengthened bow suitable for higher-latitude sailing, including six inches of insulation throughout and an enclosed heated pilot house. The single 300-horsepower Caterpillar diesel engine delivers a cruising speed of six knots, with fuel capacity and transmission gearing providing a range of 1,000 nautical miles.
The layout prioritizes functionality for liveaboard cruising. The master cabin sits aft near the pilot house for easy helm access, while forward guest quarters include a private head and desk. The galley features a new four-burner gimbled stove with oven, two full-size refrigerators, and a deep freezer in the engine room. The salon offers a sofa and dinette. A large observation platform extends around the bow sprit.
The engine room is spacious and well-equipped with a workbench, generator, and welder alongside the main engine. The boat carries two 400-pound anchors, each with 250 feet of chain in pipe housers. Power comes from four batteries—two deep-cycle and two lithium polymer—charged via a master volt inverter charger at shore power or through 1,000 watts of solar panels with a 60-amp converter when underway. Navigation equipment includes two 24-inch computers running Coastal Explorer, each with AIS and GPS receivers on a dedicated NEMA 2000 network.
