1989 Valiant 40 Cutter

The Valiant 40 is a Bob Perry design built in Texas for serious cruising. This 1989 fiberglass cutter carries a single 43-horsepower Volvo diesel and reaches a top speed of 7.8 knots. Hull #279 has been carefully maintained since 2007 and comes equipped with substantial offshore gear: a 55-pound Rocna primary anchor with 300 feet of chain, a 72-pound Bruce storm anchor, and a Fortress secondary. A Superior Offshore four-person liferaft and twin safety systems—AIS and ACR EPIRB—round out the safety suite.

The boat is well-appointed for extended cruising. A Seawater Pro watermaker produces 17.5 gallons per hour, and the galley includes a Frigiboat refrigerator with new seals and freon charge installed in 2025. Twin 140-watt solar panels and an Air Breeze wind generator rebuilt in 2023 support power needs, backed by a house bank of four 110-amp maintenance-free batteries and a 100-amp start battery installed in February 2025. Navigation and communication include an Icom IC-735 SSB with pactor modem and an Alpha 3000 autopilot. Harken roller furlers control both genoa and staysail, while a factory-rebuilt Monitor self-steering vane handles long passages.

The Volvo engine received a complete rebuild at 4,000 hours and a top-end rebuild at 7,000 hours. Hull maintenance includes a two-part epoxy repaint in 2019, a barrier coat applied in January 2024, and bottom paint refreshed in February 2025. The Max-Prop feathering propeller was refurbished in 2024. Seat cushions were recovered in 2022, and stainless steel Hood portholes are fitted throughout. An aluminum RIB tender with a 9.8-horsepower Tohatsu outboard and an asymmetrical spinnaker with sock complete the package.
