The 1994 Hinckley Sou'wester 42 is a well-maintained composite-hulled sailing yacht built around a hand-laid laminate of blister-resistant vinylester resin reinforced with Kevlar and E-glass, vacuum-bagged with foam core for stiffness and insulation. The hull features integrated stringers bonded to the mast step and engine mounts as a single unit. The deck is a one-piece fiberglass molding with Kevlar-E-glass hybrid fabric and PVC foam core, bonded to the hull with a 5½-inch flange to create a strong, permanent seal. A molded external lead keel secured with stainless steel bolts and custom spade rudder complete the underbody. The boat is rigged with a Hall carbon-fiber spar, Leisurefurl boom system, and four electric power winches installed in 2011—making it well-suited to shorthanded sailing. Running rigging was replaced in 2022, the headstay furler in 2022, rod standing rigging in 2021, and the main sail is new as of 2024. A 150% Genoa was added in 2017.
The interior features a varnished cherry finish with a teak and holly cabin sole throughout. The layout sleeps seven and includes a forward owner stateroom with a V-berth, dedicated head with hot and cold pressure water, a main salon with U-shaped dinette to port that converts to a full double berth, a walk-in quarterberth to starboard, and a well-equipped galley with gimbaled Force 10 three-burner stove, oven, broiler, and Grunert refrigeration. A dedicated navigation station sits aft to starboard with chart storage and a full suite of Raymarine electronics: radar and chartplotter from 2011, VHF from 2019, and smart autopilot from 2011. Interior cushions were renewed in 2018 with Sunbrella fabric.
The boat's power comes from a Yanmar 4JH2E fresh water-cooled diesel engine producing 50 horsepower, with a 2:1 reduction gear, Aquamet stainless steel shaft, and three-blade propeller. The engine compartment is lead foam sound-insulated with a blower. An Espar D3L diesel heater provides cabin warmth, while a 12-gallon hot water tank delivers engine-heated water to pressure faucets throughout. Electrical power is supplied by gel-cell batteries with 450 amp-hour equivalent capacity and a 120-amp dual-output alternator.
The large T-shaped cockpit features pedestal-mounted destroyer-wheel steering with an Elkhide-covered 40-inch stainless steel wheel, folding helm step, and engine instruments in a fiberglass pod. Cockpit amenities include custom Sunbrella cushions and seatbacks, a folding pedestal table, and a locking sail locker to port with a line rack. Deck features include double lifelines with port and star
