The Able Apogee 50 is a Chuck Paine design from Maine's Able Marine, built to blend performance sailing with ocean-crossing capability. Her hull combines Airex foam-cored fiberglass with Kevlar weave, paired with a deep fin keel and carbon fiber spade rudder for stability and control. The boat carries a powerful sailplan on a carbon fiber mast and boom, with modern Harken deck hardware and a fractional rig suited to shorthanded operation. The 88-horsepower Yanmar diesel and feathering propeller provide reliable auxiliary power. Hull and deck were painted in Awlgrip in 2022, and the bottom was painted in June 2024.
Interior accommodations span two staterooms and two heads, sleeping six including the two salon berths. The forward cabin features a spacious V-berth with private access to the forward head and shower. The main saloon has port and starboard settees flanking a centerline drop-leaf table, with ample storage and good ventilation. The galley to port is laid out for use underway, with a gimbaled Force 10 stove, deep stainless sink, and independent refrigerator and freezer units. The owner's cabin aft offers a large berth with hanging lockers and drawers. A navigation station to starboard provides a full-size chart table and space for electronics, while a watertight garage and engine room aft offers excellent access to mechanical systems. The cherry joinery throughout was recently refinished in satin varnish.
Systems have received comprehensive recent work. Electronics include a Victron energy package with lithium batteries installed in 2023, B&G navigation displays and autopilot, Starlink and 5G connectivity, and dual VHF radios. The transmission was replaced in June 2024. The rig was substantially upgraded in 2015–2016 with composite running backstays and inner forestay, and fresh sails were installed in 2024 (mainsail and jib from UK X Drive, spinnaker from 2023). Dual alternators support the electrical system. A 4-man Viking liferaft in a hard canister, EPIRB with battery life to 2032, and safety equipment including MOB recovery systems are on board.
