Phoenix is a 2000 Custom Dobroth 43, an IMS performance sloop designed and built by Bredan Dobroth. The hull is constructed from vacuum-bagged E and S glass cloth, some custom-woven to specification, while the keel frame and certain structural frames employ carbon fiber. The rudder is carbon over carbon stock, the keel blade is cast iron, and the bulb is lead. The boat is powered by a single Yammer diesel engine producing 38 horsepower.
The yacht has a strong racing pedigree on the Great Lakes, with multiple competition wins in recent seasons including top finishes in the Queen's Cup and Hook Race across various divisions and rating systems.
Recent maintenance includes hull and bottom reconditioning completed at Manitowoc Marina in winter 2023–24, with the hull refinished in Awlgrip Shark (dark gray) at the same time. The keel bulb was re-faired by Racine Rivers End Marina in spring 2025. The boat measures 43 feet in length with a 12-foot beam.
