Capistrano is a 51-foot aluminum expedition yacht built in 2000 as a custom, hand-crafted vessel by a New Zealand master boatbuilder. Designed and proven for high-latitude cruising and extended voyages, she has successfully completed a circumnavigation via Cape Horn, South Georgia, and the Cape of Good Hope. The hull is heavily framed aluminum with integral fuel tanks totaling 1,300 liters, backed by expedition-grade systems and craftsmanship throughout. Her solid Kauri timber coach house and cockpit have glassed-over deck fittings to avoid corrosion, and many onboard components are custom-fabricated to commercial or over-specified standards.
Power comes from a naturally aspirated 80 hp Cummins diesel engine, paired with a Lugger generator in an insulated, fully accessible engine room. The yacht carries 1,000 liters of fresh water across four stainless steel tanks and features dual water pumps for redundancy. The electrical system is meticulously engineered—fully isolated, conduit-wired, labeled, and bonded throughout, with watertight junction boxes and a galvanic isolator. Fuel lines are stainless steel and isolated; all plumbing incorporates redundancy suitable for long-range ocean cruising.
Below deck, American white oak and white epoxy finishes create a bright interior. The accommodation includes a walk-around double berth in the master cabin, a guest cabin designed to sleep five, and two heads with macerating electric toilets and epoxy finishes. The galley features Corian benchtops, front-loading fridges, a top-opening freezer, and generous storage. Eight fans and numerous opening hatches provide ventilation for both polar and tropical conditions. All lighting throughout is LED.
Navigation and communication systems are fully integrated: a complete B&G electronics suite with plotter, radar, AIS, and autopilot controllable from both helm and nav station; Starlink and Iridium Go satellite systems; and an Icom SSB transceiver. The Whitlock steering system, electric halyard winch, and fully enclosable cockpit support efficient sail handling. The deck features wide walkways, triple-wire lifelines, and inboard shrouds. A sugar scoop swim platform with integrated lockers, aft deck workshop, NZ-built mast and boom with lazyjacks and boombag, folding mast steps, and a 2023 radar dome complete the vessel.
