This 2000 Hinckley Sou'wester 52 is a three-cabin cruising sailboat with composite construction, built using Hinckley's DualGuard process and SCRIMP infusion technique. The hull combines Kevlar and E-glass outer skins with a carbon fiber inner layer, yielding exceptional stiffness and strength relative to the boat's 39,000-pound displacement. A lead keel and fiberglass centerboard drawing 5'10" provide stability and windward performance. Power comes from an 88-horsepower Yanmar diesel engine with a 2:1 reduction gear and folding propeller, paired with a bow thruster for maneuvering.
The interior centers on high-gloss varnished cherry throughout, with a forward head and separate shower shared by two guest cabins—one with upper and lower berths, the other with a double. The main salon features a U-shaped dinette to port with a custom cherry table inlaid with a compass rose, and a settee to starboard that converts to a berth. A full navigation station sits aft of the settee. The galley spans the starboard side with a three-burner Force 10 stove, gimbaled for seaway use, plus a substantial refrigerator-freezer system. The owner's cabin occupies the aft port side with a double berth and ensuite head with separate shower stall. Throughout the boat are opening hatches with screens, louvered cedar-lined lockers, custom window treatments, and careful lighting including halogen spotlights with dimmers.
The deck and cockpit reflect serious sailing capability. A GMT carbon fiber stoway mast with Reckmann hydraulic furling, electric self-tailing winches, and hydraulic boom vang and backstay adjuster support shorthanded operation. All running rigging was replaced, and the sail plan—North sails including mainsail, 135 percent genoa, 100 percent blade jib, and storm staysail—provides range from light air to heavy weather. A full spinnaker package with carbon fiber poles completes the wardrobe. Lewmar stainless steel winches handle primary, secondary, main sheet, and halyard functions.
A 2022 refit included new mast, rigging, and electronics suite: B&G H5000 autopilot with radar, 20-inch chart plotter, and multiple displays; Icom M5 VHF with AIS; and engine monitoring systems. Dual 12-volt house banks support a 24,000 BTU reverse-cycle air conditioning system, an Espar D5L heater, and a Panda 8-kilowatt generator. Stainless steel tanks, manual and electric bilge pumps, and a Lewmar electric windlass with dual anchors round out the seagoing equipment. The boat's exterior shows a Majestic Blue Awlgrip finish with gold leaf cove stripe and teak accents, and includes dodger, bimini, cockpit cushions, and custom canvas covers throughout.
