The American Tug 34 is built on a fiberglass hull and powered by a single Cummins diesel engine of 370 horsepower. The design emphasizes practical construction and straightforward maintenance, with an emphasis on fuel economy for extended cruising.

The interior centers on a single stateroom with a large head and a convertible dinette that functions as additional sleeping space. The layout prioritizes usable accommodation in a compact footprint, avoiding unnecessary complexity.

The engine was replaced with a remanufactured Cummins 6BTA 370 hp diesel during the 2024–2025 off-season, providing a fresh powerplant for cruising operations.
