The 2004 Hanse 531 is a 53-foot cruising sailboat built in Germany with a fiberglass hull and designed by Judel Vrolijk. Powered by a Yanmar 100 hp diesel engine with shaft drive, the boat carries 400 litres of fuel across two tanks and runs on 1050 engine hours. The hull is substantial—18,700 kg displacement with 6,700 kg of ballast—providing the stability required for serious offshore work. A Sparcraft mast with electric primary winches and self-tacking jib simplifies handling for short-handed sailing.
The interior layout comprises two private cabins sleeping five to seven, with two heads featuring dual salt/fresh water Tecma toilets and hot-and-cold pressurised showers plus a transom swim platform shower. The galley includes an LPG cooktop and oven (gas certified to 2030), microwave, refrigerator, and freezer. A 30 litre-per-hour watermaker provides freshwater capacity supplemented by 750 litres of potable storage. Twin sinks and hot water systems support comfortable long-term cruising.
Systems throughout are comprehensive: Mastervolt 4.5 kva genset with inverter supplying 12v, 24v, and 240v power; Simrad electronics with dual plotters and radar; Lewmar autopilot with remote; Icom VHF and HF radios; and dual Lewmar wheels with linear autopilot steering. A Lewmar bow thruster and anchor winch with 100 metres of chain are fitted. Safety equipment includes EPIRB, lifesling, danbuoy, and ten life jackets.
In 2026, recent maintenance included full antifoul and hull polish, boot line repainting, teak deck re-oiling, mast removal with rigging inspection, new cutlass bearing, speedprop propeller coating, and new mast rubber boot. An Avon 3.1 metre rigid inflatable tender with 3 hp Mercury outboard is included. The boat has spent most of its life on a marina berth and recently completed a six-month East Coast cruise.
