The Oyster 53 is a celebrated bluewater cruising yacht, built in 2005 by New Zealand's McDell Marine to designs by Rob Humphreys. This example combines a raised-saloon, centre-cockpit layout with a light American oak interior and accommodation for up to eight across four cabins and two heads. The design prioritizes comfort and visibility offshore, with optimization for single-handed sailing and excellent motion characteristics in heavy conditions.
A comprehensive refit in 2019 included new teak decks, 32,000 BTU reverse-cycle air conditioning, and upgrades to rigging, electronics, and deck equipment. Current systems include a Sleipner SP155 bow thruster, radar, chartplotter, AIS, and advanced autopilot. The yacht carries a Yanmar diesel engine and holds RCD Category A (Ocean) certification, with a proven track record in offshore passages across diverse sea states.
The fiberglass hull measures 55.77 feet in length with a 15.42-foot beam, capable of a cruising speed of 6 knots and maximum speed of 8 knots. The yacht has been maintained to high standards with extensive spares carried aboard, supporting extended voyages to remote locations. Construction quality and meticulous engineering are evident throughout.
