The 2008 Buddy Cannady 28 Custom Express is a Carolina-style sportfish built with cold-molded construction—diagonal juniper planking over a wooden frame with fiberglass reinforcement—known for a soft, dry ride. Powered by a Mercruiser 496 Mag Ho 425 hp engine with Bravo II outdrive, the boat achieves a 20-knot cruise and 35-knot top speed. The hull received a complete strip, sand, and re-fair with glass reinforcement in 2020, followed by a fresh Sea Foam Awlgrip finish. Engine hours stand at 370.
The boat centers around fishing and command. A full tower with upper helm controls sits over an expansive hardtop, offering dual vantage points for running and sight-fishing. The cockpit features dual 66-foot fish boxes, tackle drawers, and a teak swim platform with outdrive access. A custom helm deck enclosure provides weather protection, with an L-settee and cushioned engine box seating. The cuddy cabin includes a V-berth with sunbrella-covered cushions, hanging storage, and an overhead hatch.
Mechanical systems have received recent attention: new fuel pump, serviced fuel injectors, replaced sensor harness, and a new Fireboy fire suppression system in the engine box, all completed in 2023. Replaced engine elbows and manifolds date to 2018. Twin stainless steel props, Lectrotab trim tabs, and dual Morse engine controls—helm and tower—support both docking and performance.
Electronics center on a Garmin suite: 5212 12-inch multifunction display, GMR 18 HD closed array radar, and GSD 22 transducer. VHF, compass redundancy at helm and tower, and clarion stereo throughout round out the package. A solar charge controller and dual-bank battery charger support the electrical system. Safety gear includes a 6-person life raft and 200 feet of anchor rode.
