2009 Southerly 49

The Southerly 49 is a British-designed cruising yacht built around a patented swing-keel system that transforms her from a deep-water bluewater performer into a shoal-draft explorer. With the keel retracted, she draws just 2 feet 10 inches, opening access to protected anchorages, inland waterways, and shallow harbors unreachable by conventional 50-foot boats. Extended to 10 feet 3 inches, the keel provides the grip needed for confident ocean passages. The fiberglass hull is built to Lloyd's specifications and displaces 38,801 pounds, with teak decks and a comprehensive construction that balances strength with the refined comfort needed for extended cruising.

The layout centers on three private cabins and two heads. The full-width aft owner's suite features an ensuite head; a second private cabin forward also includes ensuite access, while a utility cabin on the port aft can be converted to additional berth space. The raised saloon offers panoramic views through hull windows and hatches, with a U-shaped settee for entertaining. Four-zone reverse-cycle air conditioning keeps the interior comfortable in any climate, and a large linear galley includes a Force 10 stove and oven, separate freezer, and refrigeration alongside abundant counter space.

A Yanmar 4JH4-TE diesel (75 hp, 4,450 hours) drives the boat, recently serviced in 2025 with a ZF gearbox overhaul, new damper, shaft seal, and injector tuning—a spare new gearbox is included. Power comes from five 100Ah Victron lithium batteries, supplemented by 1,400 watts of solar and a SilentWind 400W wind generator plus Watt&Sea 300W hydro generator. A Schenker Zen watermaker produces 50 liters per hour, and tankage provides 410 liters of fuel and 545 liters of fresh water. The 2024 rig upgrade includes a Selden mast with new OneSails furling mainsail, genoa, and self-tacking jib, supported by Dyform standing rigging and reinforced stainless chainplates.

Electronics and navigation are fully current: a Raymarine Axiom 9R plotter with Quantum radar, autopilot, and AIS, plus Starlink and IridiumGO for global communications. Deck gear includes a Lofrans anchor windlass, 80 meters of galvanized chain, and three anchors. Ground tackle, safety equipment, and systems have all been serviced or renewed through 2025, reflecting a comprehensive refit program that has addressed every major system aboard.
