A 2017 HH Catamarans HH55, this 55-foot center-cockpit catamaran was designed by Morrelli & Melvin and built to win Cruising Magazine's 2018 "Boat of the Year" award for cruising catamarans. The hull is an infused carbon-epoxy sandwich composite, engineered with Generation 4 designs and extensive carbon fiber reinforcement for minimal weight and maximum stiffness. Two 54-horsepower Yanmar diesels with Saildrive transmission and folding propellers deliver a cruising speed of 8 knots and maximum speed of 12 knots. The boat carries symmetric curved dagger boards constructed from carbon-epoxy with foam cores, paired with deep spade rudders and additional shallow-draft alternatives for versatile sailing and beaching.
The three-cabin interior balances openness with accommodation. The master suite occupies the port hull with a queen berth aft, 10 feet of hanging lockers, and a full head with shower. The starboard hull houses two guest cabins—a VIP cabin aft with a queen berth and a forward cabin with shared head access—plus an owner's workshop. The main salon spans the bridgedeck with wrap-around toughened glass windows, a moonroof, and full-width aft sliding glass doors opening to a large aft cockpit. The galley is U-shaped with an island. An expansive forward cockpit area provides additional seating and working space. Throughout, deck hatches flood the cabins with natural light. Reverse-cycle air conditioning provides 70,000 BTU capacity across six zones.
Equipment and systems reflect a no-expense-spared build. The electrical infrastructure includes a 540 amp-hour lithium battery bank, 9-kilowatt Northern Lights generator, 1-kilowatt solar array, and dual watermakers. Navigation relies on a B&G Zeus system with radar, AIS, and autopilot redundancy. Sails are all North 3Di 700-series, with the mainsail replaced in 2022 and remaining sails in 2023. Deck hardware includes Lewmar and Harken components. Safety gear comprises a 12-foot AB RIB tender with 25-horsepower Yamaha outboard, 6-man liferaft, and EPIRB—all from 2017. Extensive dedicated storage throughout accommodates long-distance cruising needs, including oversized bow lockers for gear such as spare rudders and dive equipment.
