This 2018 Cape George 45 is a pilothouse cutter designed and built in Port Townsend. The hull combines fiberglass and Kevlar with vinyl ester resin layered in Kevlar S-Glass and E-Glass triaxial fabric for impact strength. Carbon fiber spars and teak composite decks support the traditional Colin Archer and William Atkin design lines, refined with modern hydrodynamics to maximize interior volume, sailing efficiency, and reduced heel compared to traditional designs.
The boat's standout feature is its plug-in hybrid electric propulsion system. An 18 kW Life-Line electric motor provides power equivalent to 60 hp diesel, paired with a lithium iron phosphate battery bank and a Panda 22 kW diesel generator for extended range. The generator is heavily insulated, runs quietly, and engages automatically when batteries drop to 40%, reaching full charge in 45 minutes. All galley appliances are electric to leverage the battery system.
Navigation and vessel management reflect contemporary marine electronics: dual B&G Zeus Touch Screen displays in the cockpit and pilothouse, additional B&G speed and depth displays, Simrad VHF and AIS, Icom SSB with pactor modem, and a Jefa heavy-duty autopilot. A joystick propulsion control operates from the pilothouse, and a bow thruster aids maneuvering. The C-Zone electrical system manages cabin lighting, climate control, thru-hull sensors, tank monitoring, and safety detectors, controllable from the chart plotters or remote fobs.
Interior accommodations feature Honduras mahogany, teak sole, and laminated Port Orford cedar with mahogany cap strips throughout. A navigation station to port houses all propulsion and monitoring systems. The galley to starboard includes a well-insulated refrigerator and freezer, three-burner electric stove with oven, microwave, and pressure water system. The pilothouse offers interior helm with bench seating, joystick control, and tempered glass windows with heated forward panes. A spacious salon holds two leather settees, dinette with storage, flat-screen entertainment system, and overhead hatch. A full head features an electric toilet, separate shower stall, and pressure hot and cold water. The forward main cabin provides a large double berth with custom mattress and overhead hatch. LED lighting throughout opens and closes via remote fobs. Webasto hydronic heating and Hammond Arctic air conditioning provide climate control for all latitudes. Last haul-out and bottom paint were completed in 2024; engines and generator were last serviced in September 2023.
