The Helmsman 43E Pilot House is a 45.5-foot diesel trawler with a fiberglass hull powered by a single 380-horsepower Cummins engine. An evolution of the popular 38 model, it stretches the design in length, beam, and freeboard to deliver substantially more interior volume and exterior working space. The low-rise pilot house provides excellent sightlines and flows openly into the salon, serving as both a functional wheelhouse and social gathering space while cruising or anchored.
The full-beam salon is the heart of the design, offering generous seating and natural light throughout. A second stateroom was added in this larger hull, alongside a day head—an uncommon practical feature that can be enclosed together with the convertible settee to form a private guest suite when needed. The layout prioritizes comfort for extended passages and relaxed living at anchor.
Built for strength and sea-keeping, the boat incorporates a high, flush bow with substantial railings, a fully covered cockpit, deep side deck footwells in the pilot house, and secure flybridge stairs on both sides. These design elements enhance safety and usability in rough water. Fiberglass construction and reliable engine and electrical systems are engineered to reduce maintenance demands and support extended cruising.
