This 1899 Bristol Pilot Cutter is a rare survivor—one of only about 15 remaining from the hundreds originally built for pilots racing to meet incoming ships. Built by W.H. Halford at Gloucester for the Cumberland Sea Fishery Committee, she features the distinctive design characteristics of her builder: a centerline bowsprit, straight "Valkyrie" bow with substantial rake, external iron keel, and internal ballast. Her frames were specified at just 6 inches to provide extreme rigidity, and the combination of this robust construction with fine yacht lines made her notably fast. She was converted to private yacht use in 1907 and renamed Carlotta.
The boat accommodates two cabins and one head, with an interior restored to traditional pilot cutter layout. Power comes from a 75 hp Beta Marine diesel engine mounted on hydraulic drive to the port quarter, paired with a Darglow feathering propeller. A custom-designed hydrogenerator provides supplementary power. Navigation and autopilot systems include Raymarine Hybridtouch plotters (12-inch and 8-inch screens), AIS, and Wills Ridley hydraulic autopilot. A complete sail wardrobe by Lawrence Sails UK includes mainsail, main topsail, flying jib, staysails, and an asymmetric cruising sail with snuffer.
The hull—originally planked in fir and larch with oak frames—has been extensively renewed over recent years. Between 2019 and 2023, nearly all planking was replaced, frames were replaced or sistered, and the entire deck was rebuilt with new beams, bulwarks, rail caps, and other structural elements. The 2024 refit brought the hull and topsides back to bare wood, then refinished with primer and paint, with new antifoul, anodes, and propeller service completed. Bronze keel bolts and all standing rigging are new. A new Rocna Vulcan 40 kg anchor with 300 feet of half-inch chain and a Fortress 55 kg kedge are on board.
The boat is fitted for extended cruising and ocean passages. Electrical systems are modern throughout, with 12-volt and 220-volt power supported by a Bluetti lithium solar power station, 700-watt deck solar panels, new batteries, and a portable Honda generator. Freshwater systems include a Whale pump with accumulator and spare. Galley equipment includes Totalcool refrigerator and freezer units. A multifuel 6 kW stove provides heating. Comprehensive deck covers and awnings are included.
