This 1920 Blanchard Dunlin 42 is a heavily built classic wood yacht designed after Pacific Northwest commercial fishing vessels and Alaska Forest Service boats. Originally constructed by N.J. Blanchard Boat Co., the design was adapted by naval architect H.C. Hanson in 1930, when he oversaw installation of the Atlas 45-horsepower diesel engine and raised the aft deck. The hull is carvel-planked with Douglas fir, Alaska yellow cedar, red cedar, and mahogany over white oak frames, with a substantial keel of Douglas fir and iron bark shoe. A single Atlas diesel engine powers the boat.
The yacht accommodates one cabin and one head. The interior layout includes marine plywood and tongue-and-groove Douglas fir bulkheads, with a Wilcox-Crittenden marine toilet. A 75-gallon stainless steel water tank supplies fresh water. The cockpit has marine plywood sole and sides sheathed in fiberglass, fitted with bronze deck drains.
Extensive restoration work was completed from 2009 to present. The hull underwent significant replanning—approximately 65 percent below the waterline and 100 percent at and above it—with new cotton caulking throughout. Structural repairs included a new Purpleheart stem and breast hook, 90 new white oak frames installed, and replacement of deteriorated timber components with African mahogany and other hardwoods. A new Walter four-pass keel cooler, propeller, rubber cutlass bearing, and bronze stuffing box were installed. The fore deck and aft deck were completely replaced with red cedar tongue-and-groove decking, marine plywood, and fiberglass sheathing. The engine received complete overhaul of fuel distribution, fuel injectors, governor, rocker gear, and all auxiliary pumps; a boroscope inspection confirmed excellent cylinder condition. A new Simrad chartplotter and galvanic isolator were installed, with a new Simrad radar purchased.
