1927 Custom George Wayland 40

This 1927 George Wayland 40 is a classic sailing yacht built for racing in the San Francisco Bay and extensively rebuilt from 1983 to 2003. The hull is longleaf yellow pine planking with oak frames, reinforced with cold-molded cedar veneer and epoxy, wrapped in fiberglass cloth, and finished with AwlGrip paint. The superstructure is marine plywood over fir frames. A Perkins 4-108 diesel engine of 40 horsepower provides auxiliary power, with a feathering bronze propeller and freshwater cooling through a heat exchanger. The boat has a full keel with bulbous section, a skeg-hung rudder, and cable steering with emergency tiller option.

Below deck, the accommodation includes a V-berth forward with stowage and an overhead hatch, a head with manual toilet and stainless-steel basin, and a spacious saloon with U-shaped settee and custom dinette table. An L-shaped galley features a Force 10 three-burner stove with oven, stainless-steel sink, Nova Kool top-loading fridge-freezer, and extensive cabinetry. An aft quarter berth and navigation table complete the interior. Throughout, the joinery and cabinetry are finished to high standards with varnished mahogany and teak trim, painted deckheads, and portholes of six-inch bronze.

Deck features include three custom teak-and-brass skylights with dorades, a teak-framed companionway with glass doors, a large dodger with hardened glass windows, and teak planking on side and aft decks in very good condition. The hull shows no delamination, blisters, osmosis, or softness. Recent work includes a new stainless-steel shaft, PSS dripless bearing, cutlass bearing, Harken staysail roller-furling, fresh bottom paint, zincs, and deck touch-ups completed in the current year.

The sail plan includes a main and genoa of new 2007 Dacron, a staysail, mizzen, jib, storm jib, and drifter. Wood spars are deck-stepped with single spreaders. Rigging includes eight Lewmar and three Barlow self-tailing winches. Ground tackle comprises an Ideal electrical windlass, CQR 45-pound primary anchor with 300 feet of galvanized chain, and Danforth spare anchor with chain and nylon rode. An Avon 9-foot-6-inch tender with wooden oars is included.
