This 1955 Hinckley 36 Auxiliary Yawl represents a masterclass in classic wooden yacht restoration. Built as hull number 972, the boat has undergone a comprehensive structural rebuild using cold molding techniques, making it substantially stronger than the original construction. The hull was stripped to bare wood, refastened throughout, and reinforced with laminated frames and biaxial fiberglass cloth secured with epoxy. Interior hull surfaces received three coats of epoxy sealing. The cast iron ballast was removed, refastened, and reglued, and a new rudder was constructed to the same standards. An aluminum bowsprit was added to manage the weight of upgrades. The boat is powered by a Universal diesel engine and carries aluminum spars matching the original dimensions of the spruce spars they replaced.
The yawl's rig and sail inventory reflect decades of active racing. The boat carries six sails from Evolution and Ulman, including a 515-square-foot roller-furl genoa, a 278-square-foot main, and a full-battened mizzen. Aluminum spars and booms, new running rigging, and contemporary hardware including a 2017 Profurl furling system support modern sailing performance.
Modern systems support extended cruising and offshore capability. Electronics include a 2021 Garmin 943 chartplotter, AIS transponder, VHF radio, and NMEA 2000 network. Onboard power comes from shore charging, with air conditioning, refrigeration, pressurized fresh and salt water, and an inverter. A 2021 Viking six-person life raft and multiple safety beacons are installed.
The boat has competed regularly in local regattas and benefits from continual maintenance and updates. Recent work includes 2024 refrigeration upgrades, fresh-water pump replacements, alternator and starter rebuilds, and new running rigging completed in 2024.
