This 1970 custom-built research support vessel measures 183 feet in length with a steel hull and was originally constructed in Germany for oceanographic and fishery research. The boat is ice-classed and features diesel-electric propulsion with three Deutz AG engines totaling 3,150 horsepower, delivering a cruising speed of 12 knots and maximum speed of 14 knots. The propulsion system was designed for low-noise operation suitable for sensitive research environments.

A comprehensive overhaul in 2003 replaced all three main diesel engines and generators with new power management systems, while also renewing the hydraulic systems, insulation, and all interior finishes throughout the accommodation spaces. The boat is outfitted with sophisticated deck equipment including a 14-ton capacity crane, stern ramp, retractable bow thruster, and multiple hydraulic winch systems for scientific operations. Wet and dry laboratory spaces, an acoustic center, and extensive processing areas support various research and oceanographic functions.

Accommodations comprise 21 cabins arranged as 13 single and 8 double cabins, along with a mess room, galley, day room, fitness center, and multiple specialized work areas. The layout provides comfortable quarters for a crew or research team of 29 or more personnel. The spacious interior design allows for future modification and expansion of accommodation areas if needed for different operational requirements.
