A 1970 DeFever Passage Maker, this 50-foot wooden motor yacht was built in Japan with a mahogany hull over Japanese elm frames. The construction is substantial: carved planked hull with 1.75-inch garboards, teak decking over marine plywood, and bronze fastening throughout. The hull body was refastened in 2008. A single Caterpillar D330 turbocharged diesel of 125 horsepower powers the boat at a cruising speed of 7 knots, with a maximum speed of 9 knots. The engine has logged approximately 2,000 hours.
The yacht carries significant fuel and water capacity: 1,400 gallons of fuel in welded steel tanks and 400 gallons of fresh water in stainless steel. A GM Twin Disc reversing reduction gear and hydraulic steering complete the drivetrain. An auxiliary MD2 Volvo Penta two-cylinder diesel engine provides independent power, while a Northern Lights 6-kilowatt generator supplies electrical output. A 2,400-watt Outback inverter/charger and dual 32-volt battery banks rated at 200 amp-hours each manage the electrical systems.
Navigation and communication equipment includes dual compasses, Furuno radar and GPS with Navnet plotter, dual VHF radios, depth sounder, Wood Freeman autopilot, and a chartplotter with multifunction display. Deck gear consists of a 120-pound Wahl anchor, spare Danforth, electric windlass, and 300 feet of nylon rode. A Dickinson diesel heater, Force 10 three-burner stove, built-in refrigerator and freezer, and Chester freezer support the galley. Additional equipment includes a 2002 22-foot Achilles RIB dinghy with a 20-horsepower Honda outboard, twin kayaks, davits with electric winch, and an oil-change system serving both main and auxiliary engines.
