The Ohlson 38 is a Scandinavian cruiser-racer designed by naval architect Einar Ohlson and widely regarded as one of the finest offshore sailing yachts of its era. This 1971 example was built at the renowned Tyler yard in England and finished in Gothenburg, Sweden, combining British GRP construction with Scandinavian craftsmanship. At 38 feet with a 10.42-foot beam, she features a deep fin keel and skeg-hung rudder that deliver strong directional stability and predictable helm characteristics offshore. A single 27 hp Yanmar diesel provides auxiliary power, with cruising speeds around 4.5 knots and a maximum of 5.5 knots under sail.
The yacht is rigged comprehensively for passage making and short-handed sailing. Her inventory includes a fully battened mainsail with triple reef points, a new 120% genoa on a furler, a spare 100% genoa, an 85% storm jib on a removable Solent inner stay, a dedicated storm trysail, and a spinnaker with pole. Recent upgrades include a new Harken traveler, rigid vang, new halyards and running rigging, and a Hydrovane self-steering system proven effective in winds above 30 knots.
Below deck, the interior features a full galley, secure sea berths with generous headroom, a comfortable salon, and substantial storage suited to extended cruising. Navigation and communication systems are comprehensive: a Raymarine MFD with V100 autopilot, Series 65 wind and depth instruments, Com Nav X2 Class B AIS transceiver, ICOM 604 VHF with remote microphone, and ICOM SSB radio. A Viking four-person life raft is onboard. Ground tackle includes a vertical Lewmar windlass with a 45 lb Vulcan anchor, 300 feet of chain and nylon rode, plus a 30 lb Fortress anchor with 200 feet of line.
The electrical system has been upgraded with a new Paneltronics 12v/120v breaker panel, 12v lead-acid house batteries, dedicated start battery, 300 watts of solar, and a small inverter. This yacht has proven ocean-crossing history and carries the functional upgrades and maintenance necessary for extended offshore cruising.
