1971 Pearson 38 Double Cabin

Maggie May is a classic 1971 Pearson 38 Double Cabin, a William Shaw design built as a racer-cruiser suited to Pacific Northwest sailing. Her solid fiberglass hull features encapsulated lead ballast and a retractable centerboard offering variable draft from 4'8" to 8'10", allowing her to operate in open water and anchor in shallow coves beyond the reach of deeper-draft boats. The design performs well for her size, capable of 10 knots and handling the full range of Salish Sea conditions.

The cockpit is thoughtfully laid out with the helm positioned forward of center, keeping the helmsman sheltered behind the dodger while maintaining crew communication below. Self-tailing winches are positioned aft of the wheel with the mainsheet led aft, making her straightforward to single-hand. A well-engineered preventer system handles boom management and jibe control effectively across rolling seaways.

Below decks, the accommodations are arranged for extended cruising comfort. The salon features a custom dinette with L-shaped port settee and starboard bench, while forward sleeping quarters include a V-berth, starboard pilot berth, and a pull-out double below the cockpit. A large rebuilt icebox with added insulation, two 20-gallon fresh water tanks, and a 30-gallon waste holding tank support extended passages. A newly installed diesel forced-air heater is ducted throughout the cabin spaces.

The boat is powered by a Perkins four-cylinder diesel with a two-bladed folding propeller, remote oil filter, and hand-pump extraction system. She carries a full inventory of sails including a full-batten main with three reefs and a roller-furling 150% genoa, both from Mack Sails, along with a storm jib and spinnaker. Recent work includes new bottom paint and hull maintenance in April 2026, battery replacement in summer 2025, and a newly installed diesel heater with exhaust installation pending.
