The Gulfstar 50 is a proven cruising design, and this 1977 example represents a well-maintained classic with thousands of nautical miles behind her. Built in fiberglass with a 50-foot length and 13.67-foot beam, she carries a single Perkins 4-236 diesel engine installed in 1992, delivering 85 horsepower and cruising speeds around 6 knots. Her design emphasizes the qualities the brand is known for: excellent lighting, abundant ventilation, and clever storage throughout—essential for extended coastal voyages.
Accommodation consists of two private staterooms, each with a fully equipped head and shower, plus a crew cabin aft of the salon. The layout sleeps six comfortably and eight if needed, with generous locker space for cruising supplies. The main salon includes a dining table and two berths. The galley features a gimballed setup with oven installed in 2010, microwave, double sink with hot and cold water, and both a large freezer and 12-volt refrigerator. Two air-conditioning and heating units serve the aft cabin and main living areas.
The mechanical and electrical systems reflect thoughtful updates for blue-water cruising. A Northern Lights 5 kilowatt generator installed in 2000 supports a 110-volt system with 220-volt transformer capability, complemented by a 2400-watt inverter. Six 12-volt house batteries, engine start, generator start, and bow thruster batteries were all replaced in 2025. A Village Marine watermaker produces 18 gallons per hour. Engine systems include closed-circuit cooling, low oil pressure and bilge alarms, electric and manual bilge pumps, and an oil change pump.
Rigging and sails are comprehensively outfitted. Both main and mizzen masts are keel-stepped with standing rigging renewed in 2009; all four furlers (Genoa, Staysail, Main, Mizzen) are the same vintage and new. Five dacron sails remain in good condition. Running rigging was also replaced in 2009. Navigation equipment includes autopilot, depth sounder, VHF, GPS, SSB radio, AIS, and wind and log instruments. Anchoring gear includes dual deck anchors with electric windlass, two anchor chains totaling over 330 feet, and a 27-kilogram plow. On-deck features encompass a large bimini with transparent enclosures, stern pulpit and stanchions, and a new 2.2-meter inflatable dinghy with a 5 HP Honda outboard from 2008. Safety provisions include a six-person life raft, flare guns, and man-overboard equipment.
