1979 Whitby 42

This 1979 Whitby 42 is a ketch-rigged cruising sailboat built by Whitby Boat Works in Ontario to a design by Ted Brewer. Powered by an 85 hp Lehman Ford diesel engine, she draws just 5 feet and has an air draft of 55 feet, making her well-suited to shallow-water cruising. The versatile ketch rig allows flexible sail combinations, particularly useful in heavy weather.

The boat is comprehensively equipped for extended cruising. She carries a rigid hull dinghy with 15 hp outboard, life raft, davits, furling headsail, and lazy-jacks on both main and mizzen. Navigation systems include radar and chart plotter. Hydraulic steering, hydraulic autopilot with remote control, and solar panels (400A capacity) support comfortable short-handed operation. Two heating systems, full cockpit enclosure, and a large galley with fridge and freezer support extended time aboard. Water capacity is 290 gallons; fuel capacity approximately 140 gallons.

Over the past eight years, significant work has been completed. New house batteries (4 × 6v) and starter battery (12v) were installed in 2024. The hydraulic wheel helm seal, engine cooling hoses, oil hoses, fuel lines and connectors, and water pump have all been replaced. A new Rocna 25kg anchor, septic tank, solar panel and controller, compressor and freezer system, and portable VHF were fitted. The starter motor and solenoid were rebuilt in 2025. Interior cushions throughout have been recovered, and several coats of interprotect have been applied to the hull. New winter canvas, dodger plastics, and a Dickinson BBQ complete the recent updates.
