This 1980 Catalina 38 descends from a Sparkman & Stephens racing design originally built as the Yankee 38. Catalina acquired the molds and modified the boat for cruising, adding a cabin house to the original flush deck while preserving the sleek lines and round tumblehome characteristic of the IOR designs of that era. The 38-footer has proven itself in both club and PHRF racing over decades. Its fiberglass hull measures 38 feet in length with a 10-foot beam.
The boat is powered by a Universal M25-XPD diesel engine of 25 horsepower with less than two hours of running time, delivering a cruising speed of six knots and maximum speed of nine knots. Fuel capacity is 35 gallons, and fresh water capacity totals 60 gallons across multiple tanks and a water heater.
Below decks, the layout centers on a spacious main salon with a U-shaped dinette opposite a single settee. Forward is a V-berth with storage around it and an enclosed head with vanity and shower capability. Aft to port sits the galley, fitted with a two-burner gas range and oven, double stainless steel sinks, refrigeration, and substantial counter and storage space. To starboard is the navigation station with electrical panels. A quarter berth spanning two sleepers sits further aft. A hanging locker and additional drawer storage provide further accommodation options. Headroom throughout is 6 feet 3 inches. The interior features extensive wood detailing.
Current equipment includes a 2021 Raymarine Axiom 9 multifunction display with integrated radar and a 2010 Raymarine autopilot with wind compensation. A Xantrex 1800 charger-inverter installed in 2021, Xantrex battery monitor, and 200-watt solar panel support the electrical system. The galley has a pressure water system and refrigerator. Entertainment includes a flat screen television with DVD player and a West Marine stereo. Additional gear: anchor with 50 feet of chain and 300 feet of rode, Lifesling two-person overboard system, and a Magma grill. The bottom was painted in October 2024.
