This 1980 Hans Christian 38 MK II is a fiberglass cruising sailboat built for extended offshore passage-making. At 38 feet long with a 12.4-foot beam, the boat draws 6 feet and weighs 27,500 pounds with 10,300 pounds of ballast. She is powered by a 55-horsepower Pathfinder Marine diesel engine (rebuilt in 2022 with 686 hours since rebuild) and achieves a cruising speed of 6.5 knots. The boat carries 140 gallons of fuel across two steel tanks and 110 gallons of fresh water in stainless steel tanks.
The sail plan totals 1,130 square feet and includes a fully battened mainsail and furling genoa (both Ballard Sails from 2019 in very good condition), a storm jib, asymmetric spinnaker (Port Townsend Sails 2022), trisail, and staysail. Rigging consists of 1-by-19 stainless steel wire, cleaned and microscopically inspected in 2024. The rig is equipped with five self-tailing winches and an electric Lofrans windlass. Electronics include a Garmin 741XS chart plotter, Garmin Reactor 40 autopilot (new January 2023), Garmin GMRHD radar, standard horizon VHF, and Airmar depth and log instruments.
Below deck, the boat sleeps six across one single berth and two double berths with cabin headroom for comfortable seating. Accommodations include a three-burner Force 10 oven, Adler Bauer refrigerator-freezer, composting head, and Plannar heating. A 20-gallon Sea Water Pro water maker supports extended cruising. The electrical system runs on two Renology 170-amp-hour lithium batteries with a one-kilowatt Kinsey inverter, 700-watt Renology solar panels, Bosch 90-amp alternator, and Blue Sea 40-amp battery charger. Recent upgrades include a transmission rebuild (May 2024), bottom paint and deck Cetol (January–February 2024), and a new Victron battery monitor (May 2024).
Ground tackle consists of three anchors: a 45-pound Mantus with 300 feet of chain, a 45-pound CQR with chain and rode, and a Fortress FX23. A teak cockpit, swim ladder, cockpit shower, bimini top, and comprehensive canvas covers provide comfort and weather protection. An eight-foot-six-inch Avon dinghy with 15-horsepower Yamaha outboard is included.
