1980 Nordic 44

The Nordic 44 is a Robert Perry design launched in the early 1980s as a performance-oriented bluewater cruiser built to standards that were ahead of their time. Hull #9 in the series, this boat combines strong sailing characteristics with serious cruising capability. She carries a full-displacement hull with a deep-draft keel that provides excellent windward performance, while the broad beam allows for ample room below and generous capacity for fuel, water, and storage.

The solid fiberglass hull is complemented by a balsa-core deck with solid glass underneath deck hardware, all secured through-bolted with proper backing plates. The rudder hangs on a heavy-duty full skeg for protection. Construction throughout incorporates full insulation, which aids temperature regulation in both cold and warm climates. Ventilation is comprehensive, with three large hatches, one smaller hatch, four dorade vents, and six opening ports.

A Westerbeke 70 hp diesel engine powers the boat at a cruising speed of approximately 8 knots. The engine was installed during a major 1996 refit that also included upgrading from the original 50 hp engine. That same refit added a sail locker with crash bulkhead forward, enlarged the v-berth, and introduced a forward-facing navigation station with chart table and bench seating in the main cabin. Standard equipment includes strong rigging and a hydraulic backstay adjuster.
