1981 Downeast 38

This 1981 Downeast 38 is a classic cutter-rigged cruising sailboat built by Downeast Yachts in Santa Ana, California. Designed by Henry Morschladt, she measures 41.75 feet overall with an 11.83-foot beam and features a full keel with keel-mounted rudder for stability and directional control offshore. The fiberglass hull and deck have been freshly antifouled and polished, and she is US Coast Guard documented.

Power comes from a 32 hp Universal Atomic diesel engine with 2,360 hours on the clock, delivering 6 to 7 knots cruise speed at a fuel consumption of 0.5 gallons per hour. The engine was last serviced at 2,355 hours. Shaft-driven through a three-bladed prop with a spare included, the boat features wheel steering with a new cable system installed in 2012.

The sail plan is comprehensive: aluminum mast and boom with standing rigging renewed in 2016 and running rigging replaced in 2025. The mainsail, two headsails, and asymmetric spinnaker are all in good condition. Deck systems include a Harken furler on the headsail, lazy jacks on the main, and six manual winches. Two solar panels with Victron charge controller support a battery system of AGM batteries installed in 2016—400 amp-hour house bank and 100 amp-hour engine bank. Navigation and communications are handled by a comprehensive Raymarine electronics suite with chart plotter, GPS, autopilot, and log, plus AIS and two radios. A Katadyn PowerSurvivor-35 water maker produces 132 liters per day.

The interior accommodates six people across a bow cabin, saloon with double and single berths, and aft single berth, with headroom of 6'4" in the saloon and 6'2" in the master cabin. The galley includes 12V/shore power refrigeration and freezer, and a toaster oven. A single manual head offers freshwater and saltwater flush options. An 8-foot AB tender with fold-down wheels and 5.5 hp Tohatsu outboard, stern davits, propane BBQ, and a dive air compressor with regulators complete the inventory. Ground tackle includes a rebuilt windlass (2016), Vulcan primary anchor with 250 feet of new 5/16 G40 chain, Delta spare, and stern-mounted Bruce anchor.
