1981 Gulfstar Center Cockpit

The 1981 Gulfstar 44 Center Cockpit is a 44-foot fiberglass sailing yacht built for extended ocean cruising. Powered by a Perkins 4-108 diesel engine rated at 48 horsepower, the boat combines proven bluewater design with substantial recent mechanical and systems upgrades. The owner, a diesel mechanic, has invested in reliability upgrades including an external oil cooler, rebuilt injector pump, and a new pickup pump installed in 2024.

The interior accommodates liveaboard cruising with a forward V-berth suite, an aft master stateroom with en-suite head and gas heater, a convertible salon with additional berths, and two full heads with showers. Warm wood finishes throughout the cabin provide traditional yacht character. The galley includes a 3-burner propane stove with oven, refrigerator and freezer, and is supported by dual 2.5-gallon propane tanks.

Power and water systems reflect serious cruising capability. House power comes from six 230-amp-hour 6-volt batteries paired with a 100-amp alternator and spare alternators (60-amp and 70-amp units). A Katadyn watermaker produces 120 gallons daily into a 160-gallon tank. Three 75-watt solar panels provide renewable charging. All plumbing was replaced in 2024. Additional systems include a Simrad autopilot, CO₂ Fireboy suppression in the engine room, and HAM radio for long-distance communication.

The deck is equipped for serious ground tackle and seamanship: a bow anchor with 200 feet of three-quarter-inch G4 chain and 300 feet of nylon rode, plus a stern anchor with chain and rode. Two dinghies—a 10-foot Achilles inflatable and a hard dinghy with outboard engine—are included. A spray hood shelters the cockpit in heavy weather.
