This 1984 Custom 38 is a 42-foot fiberglass cruiser built as a custom project and engineered for serious performance. The hull features a 14.5-degree V-shape with four lifting strakes, built around a Klegecell foam core scored in a honeycomb pattern and bonded with fiberglass for strength and light weight. In 1992, a 4-foot stern extension was added to optimize propeller shaft angles and relocate the fuel tank aft for better weight distribution.
Twin 540 cubic inch Merlin engines power the boat, each supercharged and fuel-injected with heavy-duty internal components including steel crankshafts, H-beam rods, and custom Lunati camshafts. The engines run on beefed-up BorgWarner transmissions and Monel shafts, with two sets of propellers available—one sized for short-range speed and maneuverability, the other for extended cruising. Maximum speed reaches 50 knots with a cruising speed of 30 knots.
The interior centers on a single cabin with a queen V-berth, under-bed storage, and built-in closet. Custom ribbon mahogany cabinetry throughout conceals a microwave, trash compactor, sink, and television. The saloon has full-length sliding side windows, 360-degree visibility from the lower helm, and underfloor storage for the fresh water and holding tanks. Electric heating runs throughout. Navigation includes multiple Garmin GPS units and full instrumentation, with an automatic Halon fire suppression system in the engine room.
A routine bottom job was completed in August 2025 with two layers of bottom paint applied and zincs replaced. The boat has undergone three major refits during its lifetime, most recently in July 2025.
