The Shannon Aegean 51 is a fiberglass ketch designed for bluewater cruising and extended living aboard. This 1984 model exemplifies Walter Schulz's design philosophy and Shannon's build quality, featuring a shoal-draft centerboard hull with 5'9" draw, full skeg protection for the rudder, and a 4-blade feathering prop set in the aperture between skeg and rudder. The ketch rig stands 64 feet tall for ICW compatibility, and all sails—including self-tending club staysail, electric furling genoa, mizzen, spinnaker, and electric stoway mainsail—can be furled from the cockpit. The hull carries 15,500 pounds of internal lead ballast and displaces 39,000 pounds.
The interior features light oak and teak trim throughout, with varnished teak and holly cabin soles. An aft master stateroom holds a centerline queen berth with ensuite head and separate shower. The pilothouse forward of the cockpit provides a forward hydraulic helm station with a second independent hydraulic arm for autopilot steering, while an aft cable helm station serves the second position. The galley, athwartship to starboard of the companionway, includes a three-burner LPG stove with oven, double stainless sinks, refrigeration, microwave, and abundant counter space. A proper navigation center with wide hinged table sits to port adjacent to the galley. Forward accommodations include a guest head with separate shower and a large V-berth in the forward cabin. Two heads total, with bronze opening ports and deck hatches throughout providing abundant light and ventilation.
Power comes from a Yanmar 4-cylinder 110-horsepower turbo-diesel with 2,347 hours, backed by a MaxProp 4-blade auto-feathering propeller. A 150-gallon fuel system spans four aluminum tanks, while 250 gallons of water capacity is distributed across four stainless steel tanks. Electrical systems include ten Trojan AGM 6-volt house batteries, solar panels, Starlink connectivity, and a full suite of modern navigation and communication equipment: dual Garmin chartplotters, Garmin Fantom 24 radar, AIS transceiver, Garmin autopilot, SSB radio, and VHF. The boat carries an 8.6-foot AB dinghy with 8-horsepower Yamaha outboard, dual anchor setup with electric windlass, and a 4-person survival life raft.
The deck and hull were recently repainted, and the current owner has completed substantial upgrades over the past twelve years, including new standing and running rigging, newly painted masts with LED lighting, new sails from Mack, replaced water systems, updated galley and head fixtures, canvas work, and comprehensive mechanical and electrical system refreshment. The interior remains in excellent condition with all cabinetry and finishes well maintained.
